One Tree Hill-The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most

In the second episode of One Tree Hill we begin with a fantastic song by the Get Up Kids. Lucas' friends recap his victory over Nathan, which occured in the previous episode. The first game for Lucas has arrived on the varsity Ravens basketball team and his friends will show support. At Karen's Cafe we see Haley and Keith attempting Karen to attend Lucas' game, but she backs out for business.

We cut to the locker of the Ravens as Nathan strolls in with his headphones on listening to some rap. As Dan has now advised Nathan to make Lucas disappear from the team, Nathan decides that some hazing is in order for his brother. As Lucas leaves at the coaches request, while Mouth and Jimmy approach Lucas as the sports announcers of the Ravens before Whitey sends them away.

Nathan and Lucas approach the court as the sports commentators discuss the suspension of players that occured in the last episode. Brooke starts to check out Lucas, and then the big game begins. Lucas totally blows the game though, missing every shot and dropping the ball consistently and gets benched by Whitey.

They can almost feel Lucas' pain.

After the game, Nathan and Peyton make out in his car and get into a fight about Nathan's disdain for Lucas and Nathan takes off, while throwing her music CD's at her.

Keith then tells Karen at her cafe that she should have been at the game, and Karen agrees with disappointment, while Lucas and Peyton talk on the River Court as she gives him her version of "cheer". When Nathan gets home, his father starts pinpointing everything he did wrong to him, revealing some of Dan's twisted parenting.

When Lucas and Peyton arrive at her house, she asks him why he wanted to join the team and he says he wants to know if he is good. Peyton explains that she doesn't feel that basketball is really important. When Lucas asks her why she plays and she gives him a response from both points without truly answering the question. She asks him if he wants to come in and then messes with his head when he reaches the door, closing him out.

Karen apologizes to Lucas when he gets home for missing his first game, but he still bitter about it. Peyton spends some time drawing to some rock music, as Nathan gives her a call and apologizes blaming his attitude on his fathers pressure about Lucas on the team. Peyton decides to accept his apology, but adds "its not okay" to her drawing, showing us that she probably expresses herself through her art.

The next day Lucas tries to work on his game, but is not very successful as he misses every shot. In class, the teacher discusses Hemmingway's simplenes on his quest to be a good writer and a class discussion begins. Peyton insults Lucas, while he tries to be kind towards her. Nathan takes it to the max and Lucas throws him on the floor and almost punches him.

Lucas is taken to Whitey's office and gets heavily scolded by Whitey leading Lucas to decide he wants to leave the team, but will not run away from it. Nathan and his sidekick Tim talk about how Nathan beat Lucas up as a teammate Jake tells the true side of what happened as Nathan trash talks him.

Later on, Lucas and Haley meet up and she mentions his fight that he somehow forgot to mention to her. He talks to her about how much things have changed and how he wants them to go back to normal. Brooke and Peyton hang out and Brooke gives some useless talk as Peyton tries to talk about how high school is SO in the past, but Brooke adds some insight that all girls have deep in their hearts, though they don't state it quite as beautifully as Brooke.

Keith and Lucas discuss his problems on the team and Keith tells him that it will get better, and tells Lucas he has to tell his mom about the problems. As Lucas inspects Peyton's car he discovers her drawings and she catches him, is rude to him as usual, and takes off. BOY IS PEYTON SWEET!!!

Dan and Nathan discuss the fight as Nathan says that Lucas swung at Dan and NOT actually at Nathan. It amazes me that Nathan could depict this with his apparent small jock-sized brain. Lucas then gets scolded by Karen, but quickly moves the blame to her about not attending the game and as she gets upset, he tries to take back what he said. As Lucas leaves the cafe he finds Peyton's artwork in the trash and picks it up. Maybe he will put it up on the fridge?

Lucas arrives at home and apologizes to Karen for what he said, as she assures him that she does love him, but that it is hard to deal with the things that caused her so much pain in the past. Nathan and Dan walk as Dan trash talks Whitey for trying to get back at him through Nathan.

In the library, Jake approaches Lucas and they talk about Nathan and Nathan's attitude as Jake gives Lucas Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand to read. Jake assures Lucas that he will be just fine. Back at class, the Hemingway lesson begins again, but is now confidential to avoid confrontation. Students are asked to write one thing they want in one word.

Nathan "Admit it Lucas, you suck!!"

Nathan arrives at the River Court where Lucas is at and shoots perfect baskets, taunting Lucas at his recent inability to shoot and tells Lucas not to show up at the next practice. Lucas is absent from the next practice as Nathan predicts.

Peytons encounters Lucas at the Repair Shop as he gives Peyton her artwork. He tells her that her artwork is good, but she says she can't draw good because she can't draw anything that actually means something. She leaves without her sketchbook.

Dan arrives in Whiteys office and tells Whitey to stop taking out his anger for Dan on Nathan. Whitey tells Dan that Lucas left the team, and Dan couldn't be happier. Later that night Whitey talks to Lucas about the team and tells him to decide his choice by the next game on the following night and tries to boost Lucas with confidence.

We then find Nathan painting Peyton's toes (very random) as Nathan discusses quitting the team and Peyton gets excited about quitting the squad, but he laughs in her face as she agrees with his point to leave. Lucas and Haley then walk around talking about their porn names, and he tells her about not being on the team anymore. Haley supports him.

When Lucas arrives home, his mother talks with him about facing the things that he is afraid of and he decides to go back to the team. Dan pumps some more thoughts into Nathans head before Nathan leaves to the game. Dan asks Lucas to give Nathan a sports bag and stands in awe of his offspring for a moment. Jake gives Lucas some inspirational words and the CODA begins playing the great Gavin Degraw's "Belief".

Karen arrives at the game, Brooke and Peyton cheer, and Lucas tells Peyton that her art matters and brought him to where he is. Whitey and Lucas smile with confidence of Lucas' future. Dan looks in dismay to find his last name missing from Lucas' jersey and the episode ends.

Literary quote:

"Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swaps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists.. it is real.. it is possible.. it's yours."
-- Ayn Rand, "Atlas Shrugged"
